World Superbikes star killed in horror multi-rider crash, he was just 22

The motorsport world is in mourning following the tragic death of Victor Steeman.

Dutch star Steeman was involved in a horrific multi-rider crash on turn 14 at the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship Race 1 in Portugal.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and he was airlifted to hospital but sadly lost his life shortly after.

He was just 22 years of age.

"Something you have always been afraid of as a parent of a motorcycle racer has now happened. Our Victor could not win this last race," his family said in a statement.

“Despite the unbearable loss and grief, we are extremely proud to share with you that our hero, through his passing, was able to save five other people by donating his organs.

"We would like to thank everyone for the way you have lived with us over the past few days. We will miss our Victor enormously."

Fans and fellow riders alike have all flocked to social media to pay their respects to the young up-and-comer.

The sport's governing body MotoGP tweeted: "It's with great sadness that we have learned about the passing of WorldSSP 300 rider Victor Steeman.

"All within the MotoGP family send our condolences to the family, friends and team of Victor at this difficult time.

Meanwhile, WorldSBK added: "We’re deeply saddened to report the loss of WorldSSP300 rider Victor Steeman.

"The WorldSBK family would like to send all our love to his family, team and loved ones. A great personality, a fierce racer and a legacy left embedded in our paddock forever.

"Ride in Peace, Victor."

Steeman’s death comes just a week after British Superbike rider Chrissy Rouse passed away at Donington Park in England following a fatal crash.

Motorsport followers will also be aware that Steeman's form on the track this season meant he was definitely still in contention to win a championship.

Tragically, he won't get the chance to finish this campaign.

But while he'll be remembered fondly for his efforts on the bike, it turns out the 22-year-old was far more than just an athlete.

When he wasn't winning racing, he was saving lives, donating his organs to at least five.

Rest In Peace, Victor.
