How Tom Brady's net worth compares to Championship owners amid Birmingham investment

NFL legend Tom Brady has agreed to become a minority investor in Championship side Birmingham City. But how does his net worth compare to second division club owners?

In an announcement video posted on the club's official social media channels, Brady confirmed that he had come 'on board' at Birmingham following a successful US takeover.

They have been majority acquired by the US-based firm Shelby Companies Limited (SCL), who now also own their St Andrew's ground.

New ownership has come as a relief to Brum supporters after growing criticism of the previous regime.

Their huge losses incurred between 2015 and 2018 led to a nine-point deduction for breaching the EFL's profitability and sustainability rules.

They were also placed under a transfer embargo in 2018, and again in 2021 for a brief period after late filing of their accounts.

And financial difficulties meant they were largely limited to free transfers and loans last summer. But the club managed to stay in the Championship under John Eustace.

Birmingham have spent heavily thus far this summer as SCL attempt to stabilise the club - with Brady now a minority investor.

But how does the NFL legend's net worth compare to full owners of other Championship clubs?

According to Forbes, 46-year-old Brady has a net worth of £35.6 million ($45.2 million).

In the context of full owners of Championship clubs, however, the American icon's net worth is a far smaller amount.

As per an article from The Star in June, QPR's ownership group had the highest net worth of any club in the division, at a staggering $12.89 billion.

However, co-owner Tony Fernandes - the founder of Malaysian airline AirAsia - confirmed in July that he had sold all of his shares in the club, meaning the current net worth of the ownership is unclear.

In second place are the Coates family, who own Stoke. Chairman Peter Coates was the co-founder of bookmakers bet365.

They are said to be worth £7.81 billion, ahead of 49ers Enterprises, the investment group that owns Leeds (£4.79 billion, via Forbes) and Leicester's owners, the King Power Group (£3.3 billion).

At the other end of the scale, The Star claim that Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri is worth £561 million - a figure that still comfortably passes Brady's net worth.
